Mitsubishi Power, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., announced the commissioning of two M701F natural gas turbines as part of the Al Layyah power plant expansion project for the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) in the UAE.
Mitsubishi Power also signed a long-term service and maintenance agreement with SEWA to ensure the efficiency and stability of the power supply from the plant.
The operation of the two turbines at the station, with a capacity of 1,026 megawatts, comes within the framework of the full delivery contract agreement for the Layyah plant project that SEWA entered into with a consortium of Mitsubishi Power and El Suwaidi Electric to expand the capabilities of Al Layyah plant in the Emirate of Sharjah. It aims to support the economic growth of the emirate and the enhancement of the efficiency and productivity of electric power and water desalination through the adoption and application of the latest technical solutions and the adoption of facilities.
Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SEWA, said, “Al Layyah power plant project is in line with the vision of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to enhance the efficiency of electric power generation in the emirate as the main driver for economic development, and as part of SEWA’s strategy to raise the production capacity to 4,600 megawatts and raise the operational efficiency to more than 60 percent by 2030. It is expected that the Al Layyah plant, when completed, will provide the equivalent of 20 percent of the city’s energy needs.
