Bahrain launches PPP procurement for the new Metro Project

The Kingdom of Bahrain has announced the launch of a public private partnership (PPP) procurement for the new Bahrain Metro Project, an ambitious project to develop a state-of-the-art transport network with a fully automated, driverless system.

The overall project comprises 109km network with four transit lines to be developed in phases.

Bahrain Metro Phase One represents the first phase of Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT)’s ambitious plans and comprises two lines with an estimated length of 28.6 km and includes 20 stations with two interchanges.

The two lines aim to connect the key transit points including the airport as well as major residential, commercial and, educational areas in Bahrain.

The project will be tendered on a PPP basis and the Ministry has appointed a team comprising of KPMG as the lead and financial advisor, Egis as the technical advisor, and DLA Piper as the Legal advisors.

A global market sounding event is proposed to be held on 2 March 2021 to introduce the Project to International and Regional players and encourage dialogue with the industry. The Project is expected to be tendered through a global competitive bidding process later during the year.

Stemming from Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, which focuses on the three pillars of sustainability, competitiveness, and fairness, the proposed metro system will further enhance accessibility and convenience for the Kingdom’s residents and visitors, statement said.
