Austria based construction group, STRABAG announced in a statement that its corporate subsidiary STRABAG OMAN LLC has been awarded two major contracts for flood protection dams in the Sultanate of Oman.
The value of signed contract is around $195 million.
The Project has been awarded by The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.
The dams namely Al Jafnayn Dam and Al Jufainah Dam will be build in the capital region of Muscat. Construction on both projects will start in November 2020.
The Al Jafnayn Dam being built next to Sultan Qaboos University in Seeb will help protect the infrastructure of the university district and the residential areas located in the lower reaches from flooding. The U-shaped rockfill dam will be 6,500 m long and up to 20 m high. The dam structure includes two concrete spillways, two intake towers with bottom outlets and a geotechnical monitoring system.
The Al Jufainah Dam is being built near the Al Amerat–Quriyat highway in a region of rapidly growing neighbourhoods that have been repeatedly hit by flooding in the past. The reservoir will be formed by two rockfill dams with a total length of approximately 2.4 km and five smaller saddle dams. The works also include concrete structures including three spillways and a spillway tower with bottom outlet as well as various flood protection walls.
The construction works will take 32 months (Al Jafnayn Dam) and 29 months (Al Jufainah Dam).
