Spanish firm Abengoa announced in a statement that, it has been selected in a consortium with the engineering and construction company Chinese firm SEPCO3, to construct Jubail 3A Independent Water Producer Project, IWP.
The desalination plant will be located in Jubail area, eastern region of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The value of Abengoa’s scope in the project exceeds $200 million.
Earlier, during March 2020, Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) appointed the consortium comprising of Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, Kuwait’s Gulf Investment Corporation, Saudi Arabia’s Al-Bawani Water & Power Company as preferred bidder for Jubail 3A IWP. (read more)
The plant will be designed using Reverse Osmosis seawater desalination technology. The expected capacity of Jubail 3A desalination plant is 600,000 Cu.m/day.
Abengoa Scope of Work includes the engineering, supply and construction of the Jubail 3A reverse osmosis desalination plant.
Jubail 3A IWP plant will be the second largest plant with reverse osmosis technology in Saudi Arabia. It will have the same capacity as already under construction Rabigh 3 IWP.
Once the project commissioned, it will supply the drinking water to Riyadh, Qassim and Eastern Provinces throughout the year.
The project includes the construction of tanks for the storage of treated water with a capacity of one day of production, as well as a photovoltaic solar field.
Thus, it will be possible to reduce, in a sustainable way, the energy consumption of the desalination plant.
For Jubail 3A IWP, Abengoa scope of work includes seawater intake, pumping, pretreatment, reverse osmosis system with energy recovery, post-treatment, pumping station, product water storage, effluent treatment, discharge by outfall and field solar photovoltaic, as well as the associated electrical installations that comprise the construction of an electrical substation of 380/33 kV.
Jubail 3A IWP will be Abengoa’s third desalination plant to be built in Saudi Arabia and the seventh in the Middle East.
In Middle East, Abengoa is currently constructing following desalination plants:
- The world’s largest reverse osmosis desalination plant, located in the Taweelah power and water generation complex, with a production capacity of 909,000 Cu.m/day in UAE.
- Desalination plant in the Emirates industrial complex Global Aluminiun (EGA) of more than 41,000 Cu.m/day in UAE
- Rabigh 3 desalination plant, of 600,000 cu.m/day in Saudi Arabia,
- Salalah desalination plant of 114,000 Cu.m/day in Oman.
