Marubeni awarded UAE’s Fujairah F3 Independent Power Project (IPP)

UAE’s Emirates Water & Electricity Company (EWEC) has awarded the project Fujairah F3 Independent Power Project (IPP).

The project has been awarded to the Japan based Marubeni Corporation.

The F3 plant will have a generation capacity of 2,400MW, and will be located at the Fujairah power and water complex, 302 kilometres north of Abu Dhabi.

Earlier, during October 2019, EWEC received a total of six proposals from the developers.

Marubeni, along with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner South Korea’s Samsung C&T, submitted the bid of AED16.812 fils per kilowatt-hour (fils/kWh) for the project.

Once the project commissioned, it will be the largest independent thermal power plant in the UAE.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company, EWEC, Signed the the project’s Power Purchase Agreement and Shareholders’ Agreement with the The Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) and Marubeni Corporation.

The signing ceremony was attended by Jasim Husain Thabet, CEO and Managing Director of ADPower; Yoshiaki Yokota, COO of Marubeni Corporation’s Power Business Division, and Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC.

The Signing ceremony was witnessed by Akihiko Nakajima, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE, along with Saif Mohamed Alhajeri, Chairman of the ADPower Board of Directors.

The Fujairah F3 Independent Power Project (IPP) project’s scope of work includes the development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and ownership of a combined cycle gas turbine power plant, together with associated infrastructure.

The new plant will be located at the Fujairah water and electricity complex, between the existing Fujairah F1 and Fujairah F2 water and electricity plants,

Once the project is in operational, Fujairah F3’s capacity will be able to power the equivalent of 380,000 households.

The government of Abu Dhabi will indirectly own a 60 percent stake, while the remaining 40 percent will be owned by Marubeni Corporation.

The construction of the Fujairah F3 IPP project is expected to begin soon to enable EWEC to deliver initial power by summer 2022, and full generation by summer 2023.
